Hello All,

Dale and I have been communicating about the recent problems with the Forum here at pspowerbooks.com. It has been decided to retire the Forum and move all author & conversational interactions over to Patreon.

Over the next week or so, I'll be closing down the Forum and creating redirects to start funneling visitors of the Forum over to that URL (the main website showing all the books will be staying).

Thank you everyone for your participation on the Forum these past several years! See you on Patreon!!

Hello everyone! I hope you all had a nice Christmas and got everything you wanted. :)

Tonight we'll be reviewing "Oban" as recommended by Ron's daughter. This morning we'll be taking a few questions from the mail bag.

Joe Bob from Atlanta Georgia asks: Twips I see that you spell whiskey without the e. Is that just a typo or is there some meaning behind it? Well Joe Bob your correct here in the United States whiskey is spelled with the e included. However in some countries including Scotland whisky is spelled without the e and since we are talking about scotch that's the way I spell it. Joe Bob I'm going to throw you an added tidbit. For years the New York Times spelled whiskey with an e regardless of the country it came from. This last year after being bombarded with letters from scotch drinkers they changed their policy and refer to scotch as "whisky." (It didn't hurt that Big Jim went down there wearing his kilt and looking like a Braveheart extra either!)

Brenda from Skowhegan Maine asks: Twips when was scotch first made? The first records of scotch go back to 1495 (although it could have been produced earlier of course) Friar John Cor of the Lindores Abbey in the Kingdom of Fife was the distiller.

Gerald from Mohave Valley Arizona asks: Twips whats your worst drinking experience? I've had a few but I would say the worst took place in college when some friends and I were drinking lots of root beer schnapps. I attempted to walk home afterwards and didn't make it. I fell asleep outside next to my dorm and woke up to find that I had been eaten by thousands of mosquitoes and was very hung over. I made it back to my room and my roommate took one look at me before bursting out laughing. I then went to the sink to wash my face and saw that a girl I had been talking to the night before had pierced my ear with one of her earrings...which was still there and appeared to be infected. Now nothing against you fellas that wear earrings but it's not my thing and it had to go...painfully I might add. All told it took me about 3 days to recover and I do not drink root beer schnapps to this day.

Thats all we have time for folks...remember we'll be kicking off the new year with our Oban review before getting down to the serious festivities!

As always thanks to our good friends at Argy's for hosting us.

Liked the story about your drinking experience, twips, wonder if the mosquitoes got a buzz? Sort of wish I had some of my own which didn't include copious vomiting. And were funny. Which is why I mainly volunteer to be the DD. I do get to see some pretty hilarious things, but as a DD you kind of have to take an oath not to tell. :)

Lovely story about the worst experience with drinking... Surprised the mosquitoes didn't carry you away to feast upon you and feed you to their thirsty larva!

Of course, they were probably too drunk on you and now have a drinking story of their own to tell their great-grand larva. ;)

Hey guys thanks for the comments on the story..I'm glad you enjoyed my schnapps episode more then I did.

Ok..New Years Eve..Places to go people to see..But first were going to warm up with some Oban as recommended by Ron's daughter.

The Oban we have here is a 14 year old single malt scotch. This scotch has a very nice honey color to it. Oban has a rich smokey kind of smell with maybe a little citrus in there. On the first taste there's more of the citrus..almost like oranges but also very malty. The finish has some brown sugar with that smokey peat I'm always going on about.

I'm not crazy about the orange taste but that's more about my flavor profile. The orange is certainly balanced by the malty taste and ends up being nice. I love the brown sugar/peat finish..That part is really good.

This is a great scotch and I can see why many people like it. On the down side it's certainly not cheap.

Many thanks to Ron's daughter for recommending this scotch to us!

On my way out the door I want to wish you all a Very Happy New Year!!!

I drank hard liquor from the time I was about 15 years old, until I was in my early 20's. It took me longer to quit beer, so I was around 25 when I finally quit drinking entirely.

When I was drinking, I would drink scotch, bourbon, or gin, though I preferred brandy. I also drank pink wine (I see no need to call it by its French name, rose) and beer. As an American (a term I user to encompass North, Central, and South America) I always favored bourbon on principle.

I drank to get drunk. I drank because I was depressed. Drinking made me more depressed. Once I realized that, I knew my survival depended on quitting, which took half a decade to accomplish. If you can drink in moderation and it does not adversely affect your life, then more power to you. I have known all too many people destroyed by alcohol, including several who died long before they should have done as the direct result of alcohol, and all of them believed firmly that they did not have a drinking problem.

Please drink in moderation, and do not drive after drinking. Drunk drivers kill more people than all other classes of criminals combined, including terrorists.

Even one drink slows your reaction time and reduces your judgement. Drunk drivers always believe they are not too drunk to drive. Please, if you've had even one drink, let someone else drive. The kid who survives to grow up and live a full life because you refrained from getting behind a wheel after drinking will thank you.

Thanks for your comments Dan. I'm sorry that alcohol has had a negative impact on your life and glad to hear that you overcame the issues you had with it. I started this topic in fun and as you can see by my comments it's meant to be somewhat tongue in cheek. You understandably have some strong feelings about the topic and if my ramblings or the subject matter are offensive to you I will close it down with no hard feelings.

Twips, I enjoy your delightful comedy reviews on the subject of scotch, even tho I don't drink it. I know it's all for fun!

Nah, Twips, I think if we keep the isles clear and the riff-raff out we'll be fine. Even St. Paul said, when asked what was permitted in the newly founded Christianity, he said "All things in moderation" Which is remarkable for a misogynistic, reformed reprobate like Paul was. By the way, I once saw a cartoon in "Mad Magazine" where a vampire attacks a hippy, then walks away stoned too! I think I remember a conversation in a Zack or Keeley book that reminded me of that as well as your story about the mosquitoes.

Those are all good points Dan and I agree that alcohol can be dangerous. I've said before that I really enjoy the cast of characters we've gathered here on the forum. Let's all be careful out there because....well it's hard to find good solid forum posters and we don't want to have to replace you. The interview process is long and tedious and Marcia makes me sit through every single one. Plus Dale is about to hit 1 billion books sold and even though he's sitting on several hundred million dollars it costs a lot to maintain his lavish lifestyle...let's not let him down! :)
