The rape part is pretty easy, it defines how Eve sees the world, and the whole book is from her point of view and even she admits that she doesn't have a healthy outlook on sex or relationships. It's not about the author saying rape is no big deal, it's about saying Eve had a screwed up childhood and part of her is very broken, but she is strong in spite of it. It seems odd to type this, it seems beyond obvious that the reviewer took it personally and let her issues compose a one star hit piece.
Greater Demons didn't need to be fully defined, Eve's story is all about finding out about the vampire world and her life. If people want to know more about greater demons, read the two series with them as leads. Having that fully fleshed out would not have enhanced the story and would have approached the level of minutia. There was enough there to understand what they were. I think that applies to the rest of the races as well and perhaps we will get stories for them as well.
As far as the rest, that is personal preference and the author's style, which I happen to enjoy a lot.
Perhaps if there are enough 4 and 5 star reviews it could skew it back up and be less of an issue? I thought the bias works on the average rating, not the presence of a one star? Is that wrong?
